KATHMANDU, Nepal, Feb. 23 — At least 18 people were killed after a bus traveling from Pokhara to Kathmandu plunged into the Trishuli River early Monday, according to a report by The Kathmandu Post.
The accident occurred around 1:15 a.m. local time when the vehicle reached Chinadhara, near Charaundi, in Ward 3 of Benighat Rorang Rural Municipality. The bus was carrying more than 35 passengers at the time of the incident.
Shishir Thapa, chief of the District Traffic Police Office in Dhading, confirmed that the death toll had risen to 18.
Rajkumar Thakuri, chair of the Highway Rescue Management Committee, said that 25 injured passengers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment.
Rescue operations are ongoing, involving personnel from the Nepali Army, Armed Police Force, Nepal Police, and local residents. Authorities said the nighttime conditions made rescue efforts more challenging.
