GENEVA, December 27 (ANI): United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres on Saturday condemned the terrorist attack that took place during Friday prayers at the Ali Bin Abi Talib Mosque in Homs, Syria, offering condolences to the victims’ families and wishing the injured a speedy recovery.
In a post on X, Guterres said he strongly condemned the deadly attack, stressing that violence targeting civilians and places of worship is unacceptable.
“I strongly condemn the deadly terrorist attack during Friday prayers at the Ali Bin Abi Talib Mosque in Homs, Syria. Attacks against civilians and places of worship are unacceptable. My condolences to the families of those killed and my sympathy to all those injured, wishing them a prompt and full recovery,” he said.
At least eight people were killed and 18 others injured in an explosion at the Imam Ali ibn Abi Talib Mosque, according to Syria’s state news agency SANA.
Citing officials from the Syrian Health Ministry, SANA reported that the victims were taken to Karam al-Louz Hospital in Homs. Preliminary figures confirmed eight fatalities and 18 injured.
According to SANA, the Syrian Interior Ministry said internal security units were deployed to the site and a security cordon was established around the mosque in the Wadi al-Dahab district of central Homs.
Relevant authorities have launched an investigation and begun collecting evidence to identify those responsible for the attack.
A security source told SANA that initial investigations indicated the explosion was caused by explosive devices planted inside the mosque.
Following the blast, the Syrian Foreign Ministry strongly condemned the attack, describing it as a cowardly act that occurred during Friday prayers and resulted in the deaths and injuries of innocent civilians.
In a statement, the ministry said the attack was a blatant assault on human and moral values and reflected desperate attempts to destabilize Syria and undermine the resilience of its people.
The statement reiterated Syria’s determination to continue combating terrorism in all its forms, emphasizing that such crimes would not deter efforts to reinforce security, protect civilians, and hold perpetrators accountable.
The ministry also extended condolences to the families of the victims, wished the injured a swift recovery, and expressed solidarity with the Syrian people during the tragedy.
