Brussels, April 22 (ANI): A Belgian court has denied Mehul Choksi’s bail request in the Rs 13,500 crore Punjab National Bank (PNB) loan fraud case. The decision was made by a three-judge bench after reviewing the case in Dutch.
Choksi, who was arrested last week in Belgium following an extradition request from Indian authorities, will remain in custody. India’s Ministry of External Affairs confirmed its cooperation with the Belgian authorities for Choksi’s extradition to face trial in India.
Choksi’s Indian lawyer, Vijay Aggarwal, who was present at the court, emphasized Choksi’s ill health, particularly his ongoing cancer treatment, as the main reason for seeking bail. Aggarwal stated that they would appeal the decision, arguing that Choksi is not a flight risk.
Additionally, the legal team plans to challenge the extradition on the grounds that the case is politically motivated and that Choksi’s health could be at risk in Indian custody due to insufficient medical care. Aggarwal also pointed out procedural issues in the extradition process, citing the non-bailable warrants against Choksi since 2018. Choksi had previously failed to be extradited from Dominica and was receiving medical treatment in Antigua before traveling to Belgium.
