Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], June 5 (ANI):
In the aftermath of a devastating stampede that resulted in the deaths of 11 individuals and left over 30 injured, the Karnataka Police have registered a First Information Report (FIR) against multiple parties including Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB), the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) Administrative Committee, and event management company DNA.
Deputy Commissioner of Police (Central Bengaluru), Shekar H Tekkannanavar, confirmed that the FIR has been lodged at the Cubbon Park Police Station. Those named in the FIR face charges related to criminal negligence. The FIR includes provisions under Sections 105, 125(1)(2), 132, 121/1, and 190 read with Section 3(5) of applicable law.
The stampede occurred outside the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru, where an estimated crowd of nearly 300,000 people had gathered to celebrate RCB’s Indian Premier League (IPL) victory. The overwhelming turnout far exceeded the venue’s capacity, leading to chaos and a deadly stampede.
Earlier in the day, the Karnataka High Court took suo motu cognisance of the incident. Expressing deep concern, the court issued a notice to the state government and requested a detailed status report.
“News items have been published in various newspapers, narrating the tragedy that happened when 11 persons died and 75 were injured during the course of the victory celebration of RCB. This court is taking cognisance of the incident,” the High Court stated.
Senior Advocate Arun Shyam, appearing before the court, highlighted that events were held at both Vidhana Soudha and the stadium. The court has asked the state government to provide details regarding ambulance deployment at these locations during the event.
“To ascertain the cause of the tragedy and how to prevent it in future, we have also received communications from several persons on this subject matter. We issue a notice to the State government,” the bench said.
The matter is scheduled for further hearing on June 10.
As public outrage grows and questions mount over poor crowd control measures and organizational lapses, the FIR marks the first step toward accountability in a tragedy that has shocked the city and the nation. (ANI)
