Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], November 24 (ANI): The Indian film industry is in mourning following the death of legendary actor Dharmendra, who passed away at his Mumbai residence on Monday at the age of 89. Widely revered as the ‘He-Man’ of Indian cinema, Dharmendra’s demise marks the end of an era in Bollywood.
The actor’s final rites were performed at the Pawan Hans Crematorium in Vile Parle on Monday, attended by an array of top film personalities including Amitabh Bachchan, Shah Rukh Khan, Salman Khan, Deepika Padukone, Ranveer Singh, Aamir Khan, Govinda, Saira Banu, and others. Several stars later visited his residence to convey condolences to the Deol family.
Acharya Bhupendra Shastri, who performed the last rites, said, “All rituals have been completed. We pray for the salvation of his soul. No one can fill his space. He was a gem for the country, a legacy for society, with millions of fans across the world.”
Mehul, the ambulance driver who transported Dharmendra’s mortal remains, recalled receiving the news around 11:30 AM, adding, “We reached the crematorium from his residence in about 10 minutes.”
Film Fraternity Pays Tribute
The news of Dharmendra’s passing prompted an outpouring of grief from stars across generations.
Sanjay Dutt wrote on Instagram, “Some people don’t just work in your life. They live in your heart. Dharam ji was one of them. It’s a void that can’t be described. My thoughts are with Sunny, Bobby, and the entire family.”
Kapil Sharma shared an emotional tribute, saying Dharmendra’s passing felt like “losing a father for the second time.” He added, “The love and blessings you gave me will always remain in my heart. In our hearts, you will always be. May God place you in His feet.”
South superstar Allu Arjun described him as “a legend who touched millions of hearts,” offering heartfelt condolences to his family, friends, and fans.
Anil Kapoor remembered him as “Hero, Father, the OG Punjabi,” writing, “Dharam ji was hard to capture in one sentence… larger than life but also relatably human. Indian cinema will never be the same, but it will stay strong as if to pay tribute to his life and journey.”
Singer Shreya Ghoshal called him “an icon who defined an era,” noting that his legacy would continue inspiring generations.
Shah Rukh Khan: “You Were a Father Figure to Me”
Shah Rukh Khan shared a deeply personal message on X, calling Dharmendra “nothing short of a father figure.”
“Rest in Peace Dharam ji… thank you for showering me with love and blessings. An irreparable loss to his family and fans worldwide. You are immortal, and your soul will live through your films and your beautiful family forever. Love you always,” SRK wrote.
A Storied Career Spanning Six Decades
Dharmendra appeared in over 300 films across more than 60 years, excelling in romance, action, comedy, and social drama. From the charming romantic hero of the 1960s and early ’70s to the iconic action star of blockbusters such as Sholay, Yaadon Ki Baraat, Raja Jani, Seeta Aur Geeta, Charas, and Azaad, his versatility remained unmatched.
His memorable performances in classics like Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Ankhen, Neela Aakash, Aya Sawan Jhoom Ke, Chupke Chupke, and Anupama showcased his wide emotional range and enduring star power. He was last seen in the 2024 film Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya, playing the role of Shahid Kapoor’s grandfather.
Final Days and Family
Dharmendra had been unwell for some time. On November 10, he was admitted to Mumbai’s Breach Candy Hospital following a decline in health but was discharged two days later for home care. He passed away on November 24.
He is survived by his first wife, Prakash Kaur; his second wife, actress Hema Malini; and six children—sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, daughters Vijeta and Ajeita from his first marriage, and daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol from his second marriage.
Across India and abroad, tributes continue to pour in for an actor whose body of work, humility, and warmth have left an indelible imprint on Indian cinema and on millions of admirers worldwide.
