Varanasi (Uttar Pradesh) [India], May 20 (ANI): Defense expert Sanjeev Srivastava has emphasized the unmatched prowess of India’s BrahMos supersonic cruise missile, highlighting comments made by U.S. military expert John Spencer. According to Spencer, the missile’s advanced capabilities outpace even China’s sophisticated air defense systems.
“U.S. defense expert John Spencer stated that India’s BrahMos supersonic missile is so advanced that even China’s air defense systems have failed to intercept it,” Srivastava said. “He pointed out that this underlines India’s significant military advantage, particularly during operations against Pakistan, where the inadequacies of Pakistan’s HQ-9B air defense system were exposed.”
Spencer also noted that India’s successful retaliatory strikes using BrahMos missiles demonstrated the weapon’s effectiveness and have attracted global interest. The missile, jointly developed through an India-Russia collaboration, has proven to be a major success and is now being exported to other countries.
India launched Operation Sindoor on May 7, targeting nine terrorist sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir (PoK) in response to a deadly terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, last month that claimed 26 lives.
The BrahMos missile system has reinforced India’s position in defense diplomacy. It forms a critical part of India’s Cruise Missile Triad, enabling precision strikes on both land and sea targets. Its Deterrent Capability enhances India’s defense posture with supersonic speed and extended range, and the Indo-Russian Collaboration showcases successful bilateral cooperation in high-tech defense.
The BrahMos is capable of reaching supersonic speeds nearing Mach 3. It can be launched from land, air, sea, and submarine platforms. The missile was initially developed with a range of 290 km, with newer versions extending up to 800 km. It is equipped with advanced guidance systems and stealth technology for precision targeting.
Significant upgrades are underway, including the BrahMos-ER (Extended Range) and BrahMos-NG (Next Generation) versions. Additionally, the BrahMos-II hypersonic variant, expected to reach speeds between Mach 7 and Mach 8, is currently in development.
On India’s broader foreign policy and defense strategy, Srivastava asserted that it remains independent and resistant to external pressure, particularly from the West. He referenced India’s stance during the Russia-Ukraine conflict as a key example.
“India’s new government does not operate under the influence or pressure of Western nations,” he stated. “When the Russia-Ukraine war began, the United States and several other countries attempted to persuade India to curtail its ties with Russia. However, India remained steadfast, maintaining an independent stance. Our diplomatic and defense strategies are guided solely by national interest and are free from external influence.”
