New York [US], May 18 (ANI): A Mexican Navy training ship, Cuauhtemoc, collided with the Brooklyn Bridge on Sunday night, leaving two dead and 19 injured, including two in critical condition, according to New York City Mayor Eric Adams.
The incident occurred when the tall ship Cuauhtemoc, carrying 277 passengers, lost power around 8:20 PM while navigating under the bridge, said NYPD Chief Wilson Aramboles. As a result, the ship veered towards the bridge’s pillar, causing its mast to strike the underside. Video footage showed the mast breaking upon impact, with debris falling onto the deck.
Mayor Adams shared the tragic news on X, expressing condolences to the victims’ families and confirming that emergency services are on the scene.
Following the crash, all lanes of the Brooklyn Bridge were temporarily closed but reopened by 10:30 PM, according to New York emergency officials. The bridge remains structurally sound despite the collision, stated Fabien Levy, spokesperson for Mayor Adams.
Authorities urged residents to avoid the area around the Brooklyn Bridge, South Street Seaport in Manhattan, and Dumbo in Brooklyn, as emergency crews continue to work at the scene. The New York Police Department (NYPD) has advised the public to expect heavy traffic and a significant presence of emergency vehicles in the vicinity. (ANI)
