New Delhi, April 9 (ANI) — A Border Security Force (BSF) jawan sustained serious leg injuries while successfully foiling a major Improvised Explosive Device (IED) attack aimed at targeting security forces and local farmers near the International Border in Gurdaspur, Punjab, early Tuesday morning.
The IED was planted deep inside Indian territory and discovered during a routine area domination patrol carried out by BSF troops.
What Happened
- The BSF team detected suspicious objects and concealed wires in the fields during a sweep of frequently used routes by both security forces and local farmers.
- As the team worked to cordon off and neutralize the threat, a hidden detonating device accidentally triggered, seriously injuring one jawan.
- Despite the explosion, the BSF team held position and continued efforts to secure the area, preventing what could have been a devastating attack.
The BSF’s Bomb Disposal Squad arrived at daybreak, conducting a detailed search and successfully defusing the remaining explosives on site.
Ongoing Threats at the Border
The IED incident follows a string of cross-border threats in Punjab:
- March 27: A Pakistani drone carrying narcotics was intercepted near Ferozepur.
- An Indian smuggler was arrested in Bhamba Singh Wala village.
- Based on his disclosures, a joint BSF-Punjab Police search operation led to the recovery of:
- 2.575 kg of heroin from a wheat field in Wakha village
- Drone-dropping indicators: yellow-taped heroin packets with metal hooks
BSF’s Response
The BSF reaffirmed its unwavering commitment to border security, vowing to continue high alert surveillance, especially in regions prone to smuggling and terror-related activities.
“Our jawans acted with exceptional bravery. The IED blast could have caused massive casualties, but their alertness and rapid action prevented disaster,” a BSF spokesperson stated.
