Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], October 14 (ANI): Canadian Foreign Minister Anita Anand on Tuesday reaffirmed Canada’s commitment to deepening its partnership with India, highlighting public safety and economic engagement as central priorities.
Speaking during her three-day official visit, Anand emphasised that while domestic public security remains a key focus for Canada, expanding economic cooperation with India across sectors such as artificial intelligence (AI), energy, agriculture, climate sustainability, and people-to-people ties is equally important.
“I am so happy to be here in India… The main message that Canada is bringing to India is that we are here to elevate the relationship with India,” Anand said. She added, “We have a focus on domestic public security in Canada and at the same time, we are working to strengthen the economic relationship with India across various sectors, which include AI, energy, agriculture and agro-food, climate and environmental sustainability, as well as people-to-people and business-to-business ties.”
During her visit, Anand is scheduled to meet Prime Minister Narendra Modi, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, and Minister of Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal.
Her remarks follow the release of a joint statement unveiling a “New Roadmap for India-Canada Relations”, aimed at revitalising strategic partnerships in trade, technology, energy, climate action, and people-to-people exchanges. The roadmap reflects guidance provided by both Prime Ministers during the G7 Summit in Canada and seeks to pursue a constructive, stable partnership rooted in democratic values, the rule of law, and respect for sovereignty.
Under the roadmap, India and Canada have committed to reinvigorating trade and investment ties. Key steps include ministerial-level discussions and the resumption of the Canada-India CEO Forum, with focus areas such as clean technology, infrastructure, agri-food, and digital innovation. Collaboration will extend to renewable energy, decarbonisation of heavy industries, plastic pollution reduction, chemicals management, and sustainable consumption. Plans are underway to relaunch the Canada-India Ministerial Energy Dialogue (CIMED) to promote two-way trade and investment in clean fuels, grid modernisation, and advanced technologies, including green hydrogen and carbon capture.
To ensure effective implementation, both countries will strengthen their High Commissions and consulates with expertise in economic, political, defence, and technological domains. Beyond bilateral initiatives, India and Canada also reaffirmed their commitment to addressing global challenges and supporting inclusive, reformed multilateral institutions.
Anand concluded that public safety and economic cooperation remain at the core of Canada’s evolving partnership with India, signalling a new chapter in bilateral relations. (ANI)
