Brasilia [Brazil], June 1 (ANI): Congress MP and all-party delegation leader Shashi Tharoor on Sunday emphasized the importance of focusing on their diplomatic mission, Operation Sindoor, aimed at showcasing India’s firm stance against terrorism to the international community. Speaking from Brazil, Tharoor acknowledged the criticism directed at him within his own party but stated that their priority remains conveying India’s message of zero tolerance to the countries they are visiting.
Asked about the ongoing internal criticism, Tharoor said, “I think this is a time for us to focus on our mission. Undoubtedly, in a thriving democracy, there are bound to be comments, criticisms. But I think at this point, we can’t afford to dwell on it. When we get back to India, no doubt we have a chance to speak to our colleagues, critics, and media there. But right now, we’re focused on the countries we’re coming to and getting the message out to the people here.”
The remarks come amid political controversy triggered by Congress MP Jairam Ramesh, who criticized the government’s handling of security by saying, “Our MPs are roaming and terrorists are also roaming.” This statement sparked sharp condemnation from BJP leader Shehzad Poonawalla, who called it “shameful, condemnable, and senseless,” urging the Parliamentary Privileges Committee to take swift action against Ramesh.
Poonawalla also pointed to internal contradictions within Congress, highlighting the recent criticism faced by senior MP Shashi Tharoor. He warned that Ramesh’s remarks could be exploited by Pakistan, stating, “This is what Pakistan wants. Pakistan uses statements like these to give a clean chit to itself. Jairam Ramesh is speaking the language of Pakistan’s DG-ISPR.”
Earlier, Ramesh had criticized the Central government for sending MPs abroad while alleged perpetrators of the Pahalgam terror attack continue to remain at large. He said, “It has been a month since the Pahalgam attack on April 22. Today, those terrorists are roaming around… Our MPs are roaming around, and our terrorists are roaming around too.”
Currently in Brazil as part of the all-party delegation visiting the Americas, Tharoor and his team have already visited Panama, Guyana, and Colombia. After concluding the Brazil visit, the delegation will head to the United States on Saturday to further India’s global outreach and reinforce its anti-terrorism message.
