The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) on Tuesday announced the arrest of four individuals in connection with the Digital Arrests case under Operation Chakra-V, according to an official release. The arrests were made following search operations at 12 locations across multiple states.
As per the release, two of the arrested individuals are from Mumbai, while the other two are from Moradabad.
The case was initially registered at the Cyber Police Station in Jhunjhunu, Rajasthan, and was later handed over to the CBI by the Government of Rajasthan. According to the complaint, the victim was digitally detained for over three months by cybercriminals impersonating law enforcement officials and was extorted 42 times, with a total loss of ₹7.67 crore.
Upon taking over the investigation, the CBI conducted in-depth data analysis and profiling, using investigative techniques to identify those involved. Based on the findings, searches were carried out at 12 locations including Moradabad and Sambhal in Uttar Pradesh, Mumbai in Maharashtra, Jaipur in Rajasthan, and Krishnanagar in West Bengal. These operations led to the arrest of the four individuals linked to this organized crime syndicate.
During the searches, the CBI recovered several items, including bank account details, debit cards, chequebooks, deposit slips, and other digital evidence.
The arrested individuals were produced before the Competent Court and remanded to five days of police custody. The investigation is ongoing.
The CBI emphasized its ongoing commitment to combat the increasing threat of Digital Arrests and cybercrimes through continued efforts to dismantle the infrastructure supporting such crimes and to bring the perpetrators to justice.
Earlier, the Cyber Police Station of New Delhi’s North District busted a cyber racket involving impersonation of officials from the Telecom Department, CBI, and ED. The accused virtually held a woman, her daughter, and her father hostage for 48 hours and extorted ₹8.10 lakh, claiming they could remove her name from fabricated cases.
