New Delhi [India], June 1 (ANI): The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has arrested a senior Indian Revenue Service (IRS) officer, Amit Kumar Singhal, who currently holds the position of Additional Director General in the Directorate of Tax Payer Services, New Delhi, for allegedly accepting a bribe of ₹25 lakh. A private individual, identified as Harsh Kotak, was also arrested in connection with the case.
The arrests follow the registration of a bribery case by the CBI on Saturday. It is alleged that Singhal demanded a total of ₹45 lakh from the complainant in exchange for favorable treatment from the Revenue/Income Tax Department. According to the CBI, the bribe was sought under threat of legal action, heavy penalties, and potential harassment in the event of non-compliance.
Acting on the complaint, the CBI laid a trap and apprehended Kotak red-handed while accepting ₹25 lakh on behalf of the IRS officer at Singhal’s residence in Mohali. Soon after, Amit Kumar Singhal was arrested at his residence in Vasant Kunj, New Delhi.
The agency stated that the IRS officer had promised relief in tax matters in return for the bribe and warned of adverse legal consequences if the demand was not met.
Both accused individuals are set to be produced before a competent court. Following the arrests, the CBI launched searches at multiple locations in Delhi, Punjab, and Mumbai, seizing documents and digital evidence relevant to the bribery charges.
The investigation is ongoing. (ANI)
