Akhnoor Sector (Jammu and Kashmir) [India], May 2 (ANI): The water level of the Chenab River rose on Friday due to heavy rainfall in the Akhnoor sector of Jammu and Kashmir. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) had previously forecasted light to moderate rainfall, along with thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds (40-60 km/h), across Jammu and Kashmir, Ladakh, Gilgit-Baltistan, Muzaffarabad, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand from May 1 to May 6, 2025.
In addition to the rainfall in Jammu and Kashmir, the national capital Delhi also saw heavy rainfall early this morning. The rain caused waterlogging in several parts of the city, leading to severe traffic disruptions and public inconvenience. Several trees were uprooted, and vehicles broke down due to the overwhelming waterlogging. Areas such as Gurgaon, Delhi Airport, and Minto Road experienced significant flooding, worsening traffic congestion.
Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta responded to the situation, stating that the “triple-engine government” – involving the Centre, Delhi government, and local bodies – is working together to address the city’s infrastructural issues exposed by the unseasonal rainfall. She praised the efforts of the administration, which had been on continuous alert since 5 am, coordinating responses to the ongoing challenges.
In light of the severe weather, the advisory urges residents to stay indoors and avoid unnecessary travel. It also recommends taking shelter in safe locations and avoiding areas under trees or near concrete surfaces. Additionally, people are advised to unplug electrical appliances to prevent potential damage or injury, and to stay clear of water bodies and electrical hazards.
