Beijing [China], January 6 (ANI): China on Tuesday strongly criticised the United States for its military operation in Venezuela, cautioning against exerting pressure or intervening in other South American countries and emphasising that no nation should act as the “world’s police or judge.”
At a press briefing, Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Mao Ning stressed that all countries should respect the development paths chosen by their people and adhere to international law and the principles of the UN Charter. “China believes that all countries should respect the development paths chosen by the people of other countries and abide by international law and the purposes and principles of the UN Charter. Major countries, in particular, should set a good example. No country should act as the world’s police or judge,” she said.
Mao added that China supports the vision of common, comprehensive, cooperative, and sustainable security, respects the sovereignty and territorial integrity of all nations, and advocates resolving disputes peacefully through dialogue. “China stands ready to work with other countries to defend the authority of international law, reject the law of the jungle, oppose interference in countries’ internal affairs, and jointly uphold world peace and stability,” she said.
The remarks come after Washington conducted a “large-scale strike against Venezuela” on January 3, capturing ousted President Nicolas Maduro and his wife, Cilia Flores, in Caracas and transporting them to the United States in a joint operation involving intelligence and law enforcement agencies.
Trump subsequently made remarks targeting Colombia, claiming it was “run by a sick man” and suggesting the US might intervene there. He also commented on Cuba, stating that an operation there would be unnecessary due to its economic weakness.
At an emergency UN Security Council meeting, UN Under-Secretary-General for Political and Peacebuilding Affairs Rosemary A. DiCarlo expressed deep concern over the US operation, noting that Maduro’s detention constitutes a “flagrant violation of the charter” and poses risks to international and regional peace.
Maduro, now in New York, pleaded “not guilty” to multiple federal charges and questioned the legality of his arrest, describing it as a “military abduction” that violated international law and due process. Delcy Rodriguez, Maduro’s longtime vice president, has been sworn in as acting president of Venezuela, though Trump claimed the US would monitor the country closely.
China reiterated its support for Venezuela’s government and people, as well as for maintaining Latin America and the Caribbean as a zone of peace.
