London [UK], August 9 (ANI): British universities are allegedly being infiltrated by Chinese students acting as spies for the Chinese Communist Party (CCP), according to a report cited by Breitbart London.
The investigation, conducted by UK-China Transparency (UKCT), surveyed academics in Chinese studies programs across Britain. The findings claim that Chinese students in the UK are pressured by CCP officials and police to gather intelligence on classmates, academic discussions, and campus events.
One scholar told UKCT that Chinese students admitted “surveillance is omnipresent” and that many are interrogated by Chinese authorities upon returning home. The report warns that such tactics aim to silence debate on issues Beijing deems sensitive, including human rights abuses in Hong Kong, Tibet, and Xinjiang, as well as criticism of its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic.
UKCT singled out the Chinese Students and Scholars Associations (CSSAs), which are nominally support networks but have repeatedly been accused of operating as extensions of the CCP. One British academic described CSSAs as “the primary source of student spies on campus,” citing their “constant connections with local consulates.”
The report also alleges that Chinese diplomats and CCP-linked operatives have interfered with UK-based Chinese students and influenced China-related academic programs. In some cases, universities have reportedly shut down research projects after direct pressure from the Chinese government. One academic told UKCT that management blocked them from pursuing politically sensitive research, warning it could jeopardize funding due to heavy reliance on tuition from Chinese students, many subsidized by CCP scholarships.
“This is systemic distortion,” UKCT stated, “shaping careers and disincentivizing research that might be negatively received by the CCP.” The think tank warned that such influence could affect the advice given to the UK government, media, and businesses.
Beyond tuition fees, British universities have allegedly received millions from CCP-linked entities, including the controversial Confucius Institutes, criticized for promoting pro-Beijing narratives on Western campuses. Some UK universities have also been accused of collaborating with Chinese researchers on weapons-related projects, prompting MI6 to investigate hundreds of British academics.
The findings suggest a growing CCP footprint in UK academia that, if left unchecked, could undermine Britain’s intellectual freedom and national security.
