New Delhi [India], May 14 (ANI): Congress leader Harish Rawat on Wednesday condemned the remarks made by Madhya Pradesh Minister Kunwar Vijay Shah against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, describing them as “shameful” and calling for immediate action from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP). Rawat stated that the BJP should have apologized and demanded that the minister be suspended. He also insisted that Shah’s candidature in the Vidhan Sabha be canceled, questioning whether Shah’s remarks reflect the “official mindset” of the BJP or the state government. Harish Rawat urged the BJP to clarify its position on the matter.
Kunwar Vijay Shah sparked controversy with a comment regarding Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, who had briefed the media during Operation Sindoor. Speaking at an event, Shah stated, “Those who widowed our daughters [in Pahalgam], we sent a sister of their own to teach them a lesson.” Following backlash, the minister later apologized, expressing regret by saying, “I am not a God; I’m too human, and I apologize ten times.”
Colonel Sofiya Qureshi had led the media briefing for Operation Sindoor alongside Wing Commander Vyomika Singh, providing a step-by-step explanation of the operation’s details.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge also condemned Shah’s remark, demanding his immediate dismissal. In a post on X, Kharge criticized the comment, labeling it as an “insulting, shameful, and cheap” statement against Colonel Sofiya Qureshi, whom he described as a “brave daughter.” He noted that while the terrorists responsible for the Pahalgam attack sought to divide the nation, the country stood united during “Operation Sindoor” to respond forcefully to the terrorists.
Kharge further accused the BJP and RSS of having an anti-woman mindset, citing previous incidents involving the harassment of women connected to government officials. He pointed out that the wife of the naval officer martyred in the Pahalgam terror attack was trolled on social media, and the daughter of Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri faced disturbances. He argued that the BJP minister’s indecent comments about Colonel Sofiya Qureshi reflected a deeper issue and demanded that Prime Minister Modi immediately dismiss Shah. (ANI)
