Alirajpur (Madhya Pradesh) [India], July 15 (ANI): The son of a Congress MLA has been booked for allegedly attempting to run over a police constable during a late-night patrol in Madhya Pradesh’s Alirajpur district, police said Tuesday. The family, however, denied any intent to harm and claimed it was an accident being misrepresented.
The incident took place on the intervening night of July 12 and 13 near the bus stand area, where two police constables were on patrol duty. CCTV footage of the incident, which has surfaced, shows a black SUV speeding towards the constables. As the vehicle approaches, it collides with an electric pole, while the constables leap to either side to avoid being hit.
Alirajpur Superintendent of Police Rajesh Vyas said: “On the intervening night of July 12–13, two constables of Kotwali police station were patrolling near the bus stand. They signalled a vehicle to stop, but it instead accelerated towards them. They jumped aside to save themselves and sustained injuries. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered under Section 109 (attempt to murder) of the Bharatiya Nyay Sanhita (BNS) and Section 84 of the Prevention of Damage to Public Property Act. Efforts are underway to apprehend the accused.”
Meanwhile, Mahesh Patel, husband of Congress MLA Sena Patel, acknowledged that it was their son driving the vehicle but denied any deliberate attempt to harm police personnel.
“On the night of July 13, between 1:30 and 2:00 am, my son was dropping off friends when the vehicle collided with an electric pole at the bus stand. A constable fell during the incident, was taken to hospital, and discharged after first aid. But the police have wrongly registered an attempt-to-murder case, which is baseless,” Mahesh Patel told ANI.
He alleged political pressure behind the filing of serious charges: “We will appeal to the High Court to revoke the attempt-to-murder charge. The CCTV footage clearly shows the vehicle hitting the pole, not targeting the constables. This is an accident being portrayed otherwise due to political motives.”
Police have stated that the investigation is ongoing and the accused remains at large as of Tuesday.
