
Kolkata (West Bengal) [India], May 29 (ANI): A deep depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal, near the West Bengal-Bangladesh coastal region, moved nearly northwards and crossed the coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday.
The IMD shared an update via X (formerly Twitter) stating that the deep depression lay centred close to Raidighi, about 40 km southwest of Canning, at 11:30 AM IST on May 29, 2025. It is expected to continue moving north-northeast (NNE) and gradually weaken into a depression later in the day.
Earlier that morning, the IMD reported that the depression over the northwest Bay of Bengal intensified into a deep depression near latitude 21.3°N and longitude 88.5°E, approximately 60 km southeast of Sagar Island and 180 km west of Khepupara (Bangladesh), moving northward at about 20 km per hour.
The IMD forecast predicted the system would cross the West Bengal-Bangladesh coasts between Sagar Island and Khepupara by the afternoon of May 29.
Meanwhile, the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA) issued a statement based on IMD forecasts warning of inclement weather over Assam in the next 24 hours. Heavy to extremely heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is expected across western and southern parts of Assam over the next 2-3 days.
The ASDMA noted the presence of a well-marked low-pressure area over the northwest Bay of Bengal near the Odisha coast as of 8:30 AM IST on May 29. The associated cyclonic circulation extends up to 7.6 km above mean sea level and tilts southward with height. It is expected to concentrate into a depression over the North Bay of Bengal within 24 hours.
Districts in Assam expected to face severe weather conditions include Cachar, Hailakandi, Sribhumi, Dhubri, South Salmara, Goalpara, Barpeta, Bongaigaon, West Karbi Anglong, Kokrajhar, Chirang, Bajali, Baksa, Tamulpur, Nalbari, Kamrup (Metro), Kamrup, Darang, Udalguri, Marigaon, Nagaon, Hojai, Sonitpur, and Dima Hasao.
