New Delhi [India], June 12 (ANI): Defence Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday felicitated the National Cadet Corps (NCC) Mountaineering Expedition Team, which successfully scaled Mount Everest on May 18. The team, consisting of five girls and five boys with an average age of 19, was led by Col Amit Bisht. Recognizing their courage, discipline, and resilience, the Defence Minister awarded the team a cheque of Rs 10 lakh, praising their remarkable achievement under extreme conditions and noting that they completed the mission without any injuries.
The felicitation ceremony was held at South Block in New Delhi, where the cadets shared their experiences, detailing the intense training, strategic planning, and formidable challenges they faced on their journey to the world’s highest peak.
Shri Rajnath Singh commended the team for their exemplary grit, patriotism, and composure, stating that they had passed the ultimate test of endurance and spirit. Calling the cadets a source of inspiration for the nation’s youth, he remarked,
“By conquering Everest, these brave cadets have sent a powerful message — that even the highest peak is not beyond the reach of India’s young generation.”
He further expressed confidence that these cadets would continue to tackle future challenges with the same determination they showed during the expedition. Singh also lauded the National Cadet Corps for fostering national pride and contributing to the holistic development of youth — physically, mentally, emotionally, and socially.
In addition, he acknowledged the invaluable support of the cadets’ families, whose encouragement played a key role in the success of this expedition.
Among the dignitaries present at the event was Director General NCC Lt Gen Gurbirpal Singh. The Defence Minister had also formally flagged off the expedition on April 3, 2025.
This achievement marks the third successful NCC expedition to Mount Everest, following previous summits in 2013 and 2016. The 2025 team included 10 cadets, along with a contingent of officers, junior commissioned officers, instructors, and non-commissioned officers. Notably, Subedar Major Balkar Singh became the first Subedar Major in the Indian Army to reach the summit of Everest.
One of the cadets in the team was only 16 years old, further underscoring the extraordinary spirit and capability of the participants. Throughout the expedition, the team strictly followed safety protocols and operational guidelines, ensuring the safety and well-being of every member.
This historic ascent not only highlights the potential and perseverance of India’s youth but also reflects the NCC’s continued commitment to excellence and adventure. (ANI)
