New Delhi, December 27 (ANI): Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta on Saturday distributed 5,100 LPG connections to eligible families under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), reaffirming the government’s commitment to ensuring access to clean cooking fuel for every household in the national capital.
The distribution event was attended by Delhi Environment Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. Addressing reporters, CM Rekha Gupta said the government is determined to ensure that every household in Delhi has a gas cylinder and a gas connection, with special emphasis on reaching women beneficiaries. She noted that the programme would contribute to the overall progress of families and improve living standards.
Launched in May 2016, the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana aims to provide deposit-free LPG connections to adult women from economically weaker households. Under PMUY, beneficiaries receive an LPG connection that includes a cylinder, pressure regulator, safety hose, domestic gas consumer card booklet, and installation charges at no cost.
As per the provisions of Ujjwala 2.0, beneficiaries are also provided with a free first refill and a cooking stove. The entire cost of the LPG connection, first refill, and stove is borne by the Government of India and oil marketing companies.
According to the Delhi Chief Minister’s Office (CMO), CM Rekha Gupta had last month directed the Delhi Urban Improvement Shelter Board (DUISIB) to conduct surveys in slum areas to identify families still using traditional stoves and hearths. The initiative aims to extend clean fuel access to such households, thereby reducing pollution and health risks associated with conventional cooking methods.
The Delhi government reiterated that ensuring clean energy access in slum settlements remains a key priority as part of its broader efforts to improve public health and environmental outcomes.
