New Delhi [India], April 23 (ANI): A Delhi court on Wednesday reserved its decision on a plea filed by Tahawwur Rana, seeking permission to communicate with his family over the phone. Rana’s lawyer, Piyush Sachdeva, argued that as a foreign national, Rana has the fundamental right to speak with his family, who are reportedly concerned about his treatment while in custody.
However, the National Investigation Agency (NIA) opposed the request, citing concerns about the ongoing investigation and the possibility of Rana divulging sensitive information during such a conversation. The NIA expressed the need for caution in light of the serious charges against him.
Special Judge Chander Jit Singh has stated that the verdict on this matter will be issued tomorrow.
Rana, a Pakistani-Canadian, is accused of involvement in terrorism-related activities. He was recently extradited from the United States to India to face charges of conspiracy, terrorism, and waging war, among others. His alleged involvement spans multiple cities with potential targets beyond India’s borders. The court has authorized an 18-day police custody remand, with strict protocols, including medical evaluations, to ensure Rana’s well-being during custody.
The court emphasized the seriousness of the case, noting the direct threat to national security and highlighting the need for thorough investigation and evidence collection, including forensic materials and documents related to reconnaissance operations.
Given the nature of the charges, the court indicated that extended police custody beyond the standard CrPC limitations could be granted under the provisions of the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA), which applies to terrorism-related offenses. (ANI)
