New Delhi [India], June 29 (ANI): In a significant boost to urban infrastructure, the Delhi government has initiated a Rs 950-crore plan to reconstruct 415 kilometers of damaged and aging roads across the national capital. The proposal, aimed at rejuvenating key road networks, has been submitted to the Central government under the Central Road Fund (CRF) for financial assistance.
Prominent roadways such as Outer Ring Road, Mathura Road, Najafgarh Road, and Vikas Marg are among the stretches slated for complete reconstruction. So far, 150 km of roadwork has already been completed, with an additional 100 km currently under construction, a senior government official told ANI.
The project targets the repair of 500 kilometers of roads in the upcoming financial year, alongside comprehensive work on footpaths, drainage systems, and recarpeting. Construction contracts will be awarded through a transparent e-tendering process, with a completion deadline set for 2026.
Highlighting the urgency of road repairs, the Public Works Department (PWD) has also launched an aggressive pothole-filling campaign. On June 23, the department filled 3,400 potholes in a single day, underscoring the administration’s commitment to improving commuting conditions.
PWD Minister Parvesh Verma emphasized the government’s dedication to transforming Delhi’s roads. “Our commitment is to give good roads to the people of Delhi. Construction of roads is in progress. We have constructed 150 km of roads and have a target of 500 km for this year. The previous government constructed poor-quality roads. We will recarpet all the roads,” Verma told ANI.
To ensure citizen participation and transparency, the Delhi government has enabled residents to report road issues via the PWD’s official website and mobile app.
If approved by the Centre, the Rs 950-crore funding will significantly accelerate the pace of road upgrades, improving not just daily commute but also road safety and traffic management across the capital. (ANI)
