Berlin [Germany]/New Delhi, December 19 (ANI): Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi on Friday described democracy as a continuous process rooted in engagement, responsibility, and accountability while addressing an audience at the Hertie School in Berlin, according to highlights shared by the Indian Overseas Congress (IOC).
“Democracy is not merely a system of government—it is a constant process of engagement, responsibility, and accountability,” Gandhi said, reflecting on leadership, democratic values, and global responsibility in a rapidly changing world.
Addressing students, scholars, and academics, Gandhi shared insights drawn from his personal and political experiences. He spoke about a global transition in power and offered his perspectives on the state of Indian democracy, emphasizing the importance of inclusive and equitable education and the need for stronger international cooperation to address deep-rooted structural inequalities, the IOC said.
Earlier, Gandhi received a warm welcome in Berlin from Indian Overseas Congress leaders, including Sonia Heldestad, President of the IOC Women’s Wing, Sweden, and Gurminder Kaur Randhawa, Convener of the UK-Europe Wing. An IOC post on X said they hailed his voice for democracy, constitutional values, and unity that continues to inspire across borders.
The visit is part of efforts to strengthen the Congress party’s global outreach. The IOC said Gandhi is in Germany to address the Indian diaspora and engage with party presidents across Europe, with discussions focusing on NRI issues and strategies to expand the party’s ideological reach.
The five-day visit, announced during the Winter Session of Parliament, has drawn criticism from BJP leaders, who have questioned his frequent overseas trips. Gandhi’s visit to Germany is scheduled to conclude on December 20.
