Bengaluru (Karnataka) [India], April 27 (ANI): Union Minister for Education Dharmendra Pradhan offered a heartfelt tribute to former ISRO chief Dr. K. Kasturirangan, who passed away at the age of 84, describing him as a “priceless gem” of the country.
Dr. Kasturirangan was cremated with full state honors today in Bengaluru.
In his tribute, Minister Pradhan highlighted the profound impact Kasturirangan had on the fields of science, education, and social life, emphasizing the enduring legacy he left behind.
“Kasturirangan was a priceless gem of our country. He established numerous new standards and achieved remarkable heights, particularly in the realms of science, education, and social life,” Pradhan said, reflecting on the life and contributions of the visionary scientist.
Dr. Kasturirangan served as the Chairman of the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) for nine years, from 1994 to 2003. Beyond his contributions to space research, he played a pivotal role in shaping India’s education landscape, leading the committee that drafted the National Education Policy 2020.
Pradhan also recalled how Prime Minister Narendra Modi entrusted Dr. Kasturirangan with the significant responsibility of developing and steering the National Education Policy, noting that its implementation would be a fitting tribute to his vision.
“Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given him a major responsibility to create and lead the new education policy. As the head of the Education Department, I had the privilege of working closely with him. The implementation of this education policy will serve as a tribute to his extraordinary vision,” the Union Education Minister stated.
Earlier today, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah paid his last respects to Dr. Kasturirangan and expressed profound grief over his passing.
“The demise of Dr. Kasturirangan is an irreparable loss for the country. He was a renowned scientist who made enormous contributions to the field of space research and to Karnataka. The state government must continue to honor his legacy,” the Chief Minister said while speaking to reporters.
Meanwhile, Prime Minister Modi also paid homage to the late scientist during the 121st episode of his radio program, Mann Ki Baat.
“His contribution to science, education, and elevating India’s space program to new heights will always be remembered. Under his leadership, ISRO gained a distinct global identity. Many of the satellites that India relies on today were launched under his guidance,” PM Modi remarked.
A recipient of the Padma Shri, Padma Bhushan, and Padma Vibhushan honors, Dr. K. Kasturirangan also served as a member of the Rajya Sabha from 2003 to 2009 and was a member of the Planning Commission of India following his illustrious tenure as ISRO Chairman. (ANI)
