Washington, D.C. [US], July 19 (ANI): U.S. Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard on Friday called for the prosecution of officials from the Obama administration over what she alleged was a “treasonous conspiracy” to undermine the 2016 presidential election through politicized intelligence and false claims of Russian interference to favor Donald Trump.
In a statement posted on X, Gabbard directly accused former President Barack Obama and senior members of his administration — including former DNI James Clapper, CIA Director John Brennan, and FBI Director James Comey — of manufacturing intelligence to falsely implicate Russia in Trump’s victory.
“Americans will finally learn the truth about how in 2016, intelligence was politicized and weaponized by the most powerful people in the Obama administration to lay the groundwork for what was essentially a years-long coup against President Donald Trump, subverting the will of the American people and undermining our democratic republic,” Gabbard said.
The Office of the Director of National Intelligence (ODNI) also released a 114-page document outlining evidence that the Intelligence Community (IC), prior to the November 2016 election, consistently assessed Russia was “probably not trying … to influence the election by using cyber means.”
The document noted that on December 8, 2016, a draft of the President’s Daily Brief stated that Russia “did not impact recent U.S. election results” through malicious cyber activity. However, Gabbard alleged that this assessment was abruptly withdrawn “based on new guidance” from the Obama administration and never published.
According to her statement, on December 9, 2016, Obama convened a National Security Council meeting with Clapper, Brennan, Comey, and others, directing the IC to produce a new assessment claiming Russian interference, despite earlier intelligence contradicting that narrative.
“The next day, top national security officials gathered at the Obama White House to discuss Russia. Obama directed the IC to create a new intelligence assessment that detailed Russian election meddling, even though it would contradict multiple intelligence assessments released over the previous several months,” she said.
Gabbard cited internal ODNI emails in which Clapper’s executive assistant instructed the CIA, FBI, NSA, and DHS to create the new narrative “per the President’s request.”
She also accused Obama officials of leaking false claims to media outlets, including The Washington Post, asserting that Russia had interfered in the election through cyberattacks.
On January 6, 2017, the IC released a new Intelligence Community Assessment (ICA), which Gabbard said relied on the discredited Steele Dossier and laid the foundation for the Mueller investigation, two impeachments of President Trump, and heightened U.S.-Russia tensions.
“After months of investigation into this matter, the facts reveal this new assessment was based on information that was known by those involved to be manufactured — i.e., the Steele Dossier — or deemed as not credible,” she said. “This was politicized intelligence used as the basis for countless smears seeking to delegitimize President Trump’s victory.”
Calling for accountability, Gabbard urged the Department of Justice (DOJ) to investigate and prosecute those involved.
“No matter how powerful, every person involved in this conspiracy must be investigated and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law to ensure nothing like this ever happens again,” she said.
Gabbard announced that all related documents have been sent to the DOJ for criminal referral.
“The American people’s faith and trust in our democratic republic — and therefore the future of our nation — depends on it. As such, I am providing all documents to the Department of Justice to deliver the accountability that President Trump, his family, and the American people deserve,” she added. (ANI)
