Washington DC [US], July 31 (ANI): United States President Donald Trump on Wednesday made strong remarks regarding India’s ties with Russia, asserting indifference to New Delhi’s dealings with Moscow and sharply criticizing both nations’ economies and trade practices. In a post on Truth Social, Trump also issued a warning to former Russian President Dmitry Medvedev, calling his recent comments provocative.
“I don’t care what India does with Russia. They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care. We have done very little business with India, their tariffs are too high, among the highest in the world. Likewise, Russia and the USA do almost no business together. Let’s keep it that way, and tell Medvedev, the failed former President of Russia, who thinks he’s still President, to watch his words. He’s entering very dangerous territory!” Trump posted.
The statement comes in the wake of comments made by Dmitry Medvedev on July 28, in which he criticized Trump’s posture toward Russia, likening it to that of current US President Joe Biden and warning that ultimatums aimed at Moscow were steps toward a broader conflict. Medvedev wrote on X (formerly Twitter), “Trump’s playing the ultimatum game with Russia: 50 days or 10… He should remember two things: 1. Russia isn’t Israel or even Iran. 2. Each new ultimatum is a threat and a step towards war—not just with Ukraine, but with his own country. Don’t go down the Sleepy Joe road!”
Trump’s rhetoric on India and Russia follows a series of tariff threats. On Wednesday, Trump reiterated plans to impose a 25 per cent tariff—and an additional penalty—on Indian imports, citing India’s high trade barriers and ongoing purchases of Russian oil and military hardware. The former president has recently secured deals with other key trade partners, with tariff rates ranging from 15 to 20 per cent, aimed at expanding access for American goods and foreign investments.
Trump also questioned India’s involvement in the BRICS alliance, framing it as antagonistic to US interests. “They have BRICS, which is basically a group of countries that are anti the United States, and India is a member of that, if you can believe it,” he told reporters at the White House. Referring to BRICS’ efforts to challenge US financial dominance, he added, “It’s an attack on the dollar, and we’re not going to let anybody attack the dollar.”
The latest statements underscore growing tensions between the United States and India over trade and geopolitical alignments, especially as India maintains a delicate balance in its relations with Russia while navigating global expectations. (ANI)
