Washington, D.C. (U.S.), May 22 (ANI): Two staff members of the Israeli Embassy were fatally shot outside the Capital Jewish Museum in Washington, D.C., in what authorities are investigating as a suspected antisemitic attack.
The shooting occurred around 9:15 p.m. local time on F Street, near the museum and an FBI office building. Law enforcement officials stated that the victims were shot at close range while exiting a diplomatic event hosted at the museum.
A spokesperson for the Israeli Embassy confirmed that the Israeli Ambassador was not present during the incident.
South Dakota Governor Kristi Noem described the killings as “senseless” in a post on social media, adding, “We are actively investigating and working to get more information to share. Please pray for the families of the victims. We will bring this depraved perpetrator to justice.”
Shortly after the attack, former U.S. President Donald Trump condemned the shooting on Truth Social, calling it “obviously based on antisemitism.” He declared, “These horrible D.C. killings must end, NOW! Hatred and Radicalism have no place in the USA.” Trump extended his condolences to the victims’ families, stating, “So sad that such things as this can happen! God Bless You ALL!”
U.S. Senator Marco Rubio also issued a strong statement, labeling the act “a brazen act of cowardly, antisemitic violence.” He affirmed that authorities would “track down those responsible and bring them to justice,” emphasizing bipartisan consensus on the urgent need to combat antisemitic extremism.
Israeli political leaders also responded swiftly. Former Justice Minister Gideon Sa’ar said he was “horrified by this morning’s terrorist attack,” which claimed the lives of two embassy staffers. He emphasized the growing threats faced by Israeli representatives abroad and reaffirmed Israel’s resolve: “Israel will not surrender to terror.”
The victims’ identities have not yet been released, but preliminary reports indicate they were a young couple who had planned to become engaged. The shooter, identified as Elias Rodriguez of Chicago, allegedly shouted pro-Palestinian slogans during and after the attack.
The Washington, D.C., police, in coordination with federal agencies, are continuing their investigation. Authorities are working to determine the full scope of the attack, any potential affiliations of the suspect, and whether the shooting was part of a broader security threat.
As the investigation unfolds, the attack has sparked renewed calls for vigilance against antisemitic violence and stronger protections for diplomatic personnel in the United States. (ANI)
