
New Delhi [India], June 5 (ANI): The Society of Indian Law Firms (SILF) recently hosted the Climate Change Conference and Awards 2025, spotlighting the judiciary’s pivotal role in environmental protection and sustainability in India. The event was graced by Chief Guest Justice Sanjay Karol and Guest of Honour Justice Jasmeet Singh, and included the presentation of the SILF Sustainability Award 2025 to Justice Abhay Shreeniwas Oka in recognition of his significant contributions to environmental law.
Justice Abhay S. Oka emphasized that environmental justice is inseparable from social and economic equity, stressing that protecting nature is fundamental to upholding human dignity. He highlighted the Supreme Court’s strong jurisprudence against pollution, especially its impact on vulnerable communities, and called for action that goes beyond legal precedents to bring about meaningful sustainability on the ground.
Justice Jasmeet Singh underscored the urgency of the climate crisis, affirming the judiciary’s responsibility to strike a balance between conservation and development. He appealed for collective efforts rooted in innovation and unwavering commitment to achieve sustainable progress.
Chief Guest Justice Sanjay Karol characterized climate change as an emergency demanding immediate attention. He praised Indian courts for their proactive role in environmental protection and emphasized the importance of grassroots initiatives and active citizen participation to maintain ecological balance.
Dr. Lalit Bhasin, President of SILF, lauded the judiciary for setting vital precedents in environmental accountability and urged a sustained focus on sustainability.
