Mumbai, January 17 (ANI): US Ambassador to India, Sergio Gor, visited the iconic Gateway of India during his trip to Mumbai and encouraged people to experience the city’s splendor. In a post on social media platform X, Gor shared a photo with the Gateway of India in the background, writing, “Discover the enchanting beauty of Mumbai—a vibrant tapestry of bustling streets, iconic landmarks like the Gateway of India, and the sparkling Arabian Sea. Everyone must visit to feel its magic!”
The Gateway of India, an arch monument built in the 20th century, commemorates the landing of King George V and Queen Mary at Apollo Bunder during their 1911 visit to India. Constructed in the Indo-Saracenic style, its foundation stone was laid on March 31, 1911. The basalt arch stands 26 meters (85 feet) high and later served as a ceremonial entrance for Viceroys and new Governors of Bombay. The monument, sometimes referred to as the “Taj Mahal of Mumbai,” remains one of the city’s top tourist attractions.
On Saturday, Ambassador Gor also met Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis to discuss strategic priorities to strengthen collaboration in trade, entertainment, technology, and manufacturing. CM Fadnavis highlighted several flagship initiatives, including Navi Mumbai International Edu City, and both sides agreed to work more closely to deepen the U.S.-Maharashtra partnership.
Earlier on Saturday, Gor held talks with Reserve Bank of India Governor Sanjay Malhotra to discuss expanded cooperation in the technology sector. Gor posted on X, “Very much enjoyed meeting RBI Governor Sanjay Malhotra. We discussed areas of increased cooperation, including new state-of-the-art U.S. technology.”
Gor also met with N. Chandrasekaran, Chairperson of the Tata Companies, describing it as a productive discussion. “I had a productive meeting with N. Chandrasekaran, Chairman of Tata Companies, a conglomerate with an impressive 150-year-old legacy and a significant footprint in the United States,” he said.
On Friday, Gor visited the US Consulate in Mumbai, marking his first trip to the city, and described the visit as a step toward strengthening the US-India partnership. He wrote, “Excited to kick off my first visit to Mumbai with a visit to our Consulate! Our dedicated team is working hard to bolster the US-India partnership.”
Gor’s Mumbai visit comes days after he presented his credentials to President Droupadi Murmu at Rashtrapati Bhavan on January 14. Earlier, at the US Embassy, he attested to President Donald Trump’s friendship with Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi as “real,” emphasizing that genuine friends can disagree but always resolve differences.
“It is great to be here as the United States’ Ambassador. I come to this remarkable nation with profound respect and a clear mission: to take the partnership between our two nations to the next level. This is the intersection between the world’s oldest democracy and the world’s largest democracy. During my last dinner with President Trump, he recounted his recent visit to India and his close friendship with the Prime Minister of India. I hope the President will visit us soon, ideally within the next year or two. President Trump has a habit of calling at 2 in the morning, and with the time difference in New Delhi, it might work out pretty well,” Gor said.
The Ambassador emphasized the strategic importance of US-India relations and outlined his intent to pursue an ambitious agenda to advance bilateral cooperation.
