New Delhi [India], June 12 (ANI): Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami has strongly condemned the violent attack on the ancestral home of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore in Bangladesh, describing it as “far beyond mere vandalism.” He called the act a “premeditated hate crime” and an assault on the “civilizational spirit and cultural heritage of Bharat.”
In a sharply worded social media post, CM Dhami stated, “Shocking and unacceptable. A violent mob in Bangladesh has desecrated the ancestral home of Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, the iconic Kutchery House in Shahjadpur, shattering windows, destroying property, and raising hateful slogans, all under the silent gaze of Mohammad Yunus’s government. This is far beyond mere vandalism—it is a premeditated hate crime, an attack on the civilizational spirit and cultural heritage of Bharat.”
Dhami further asserted that the attack represented the systemic marginalization of Hindu Bengalis in Bangladesh and the erosion of their cultural and historical legacy. “Tagore is a global figure, but he remains a treasured symbol of India’s soul. What we are witnessing is the ongoing marginalisation of Hindu Bengalis in Bangladesh, their identity, history, and legacy being systematically eroded. The international community cannot afford to remain indifferent. This is a moment that demands attention, condemnation, and action,” he wrote.
Earlier in the day, BJP Member of Parliament Sambit Patra also voiced his outrage and urged the global community to denounce the reported vandalism. Addressing the media at the BJP headquarters in New Delhi, Patra said that miscreants had targeted Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral residence—known as Kacharibari—on Tuesday, June 10.
“Rabindranath Tagore’s ancestral house in Bangladesh has been attacked and damaged. His Kacharibari, built by his grandfather, was targeted. We are getting reports that members of Jamaat-e-Islami and Hefazat-e-Islam were behind the incident,” Patra said. “It is also being reported that this was a pre-planned attack, planned for five days, with the intention of sending a disturbing message to the world by targeting the very foundation and pillar of our civilisation and Bengal’s cultural identity.”
He continued, “Rabindranath Tagore is no ordinary figure. An attack on his house is an attack on his philosophy, his ideals. We appeal to the world community to come together and stand against this. The BJP, as a party that believes in inclusiveness, makes a global call to all nations that uphold morality, creativity, and cultural heritage—join us in condemning this act.”
Patra also criticized the interim government led by Muhammad Yunus, alleging its failure to protect an internationally significant monument. (ANI)
