The controversy surrounding the Malayalam film ‘Empuraan’ has intensified, with Congress MP KC Venugopal stating that those protesting against the film have a “guilty conscience.” The film has been facing backlash from right-wing groups over alleged references to the 2002 Gujarat riots.
Venugopal defended the film, calling the protests “an attack on freedom of expression.” He stated that he had watched the film and found nothing objectionable, emphasizing that “it is just cinema, and everyone should see it that way.”
Kerala Culture Minister Saji Cherian also expressed solidarity with the filmmakers. He praised director Prithviraj, stating that the film is “at par with world cinema” and carries a strong message of unity. Cherian added that “an art form should be seen as an art form” and that Kerala should stand united against unwarranted criticism.
Meanwhile, Kerala CM Pinarayi Vijayan and Opposition Leader VD Satheesan extended support to the film’s makers, while Kerala BJP President Rajeev Chandrasekhar vowed never to watch the film.
Mohanlal’s Response:

Mohanlal reassured fans that the film does not promote hatred toward any political movement, ideology, or religious group. He stated that as an artist, it is his duty to ensure that his films do not offend any community.
