
Guwahati (Assam) [India], June 5 (ANI): On the occasion of World Environment Day, Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced that forest guards across the state have been equipped with modern weaponry to enhance wildlife protection efforts. Speaking at celebrations held in Guwahati, CM Sarma emphasized the government’s commitment to safeguarding Assam’s diverse and rich biodiversity.
Sharing the update on social media platform X, the Chief Minister posted, “Our Forest Guards are now equipped with the latest arms to protect our diverse faunal friends. World Environment Day Celebrations, Guwahati.” Link to post
The announcement underscores the state’s broader efforts to bolster conservation and address threats such as poaching and illegal encroachment in forest areas.
In a separate event, CM Sarma joined Olympic medalist Lovlina Borgohain for the inauguration of the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy at Barchandra in North Guwahati. The facility is a landmark project aimed at empowering youth and nurturing elite boxing talent from Assam and the northeastern region.
According to a statement from IOS Sports and Entertainment, the academy is the first of its kind in Guwahati and features a 26×26 dimension boxing ring, a fully equipped gymnasium, and professional training amenities designed to develop grassroots talent.
Lauding Lovlina’s initiative, CM Sarma said, “Lovlina has not only brought immense glory to Assam and India with her Olympic medal but has also become a beacon of inspiration for countless aspiring athletes. The launch of the Lovlina Borgohain Boxing Academy is a testament to her dedication to nurturing grassroots talent and will undoubtedly play a pivotal role in shaping the future of boxing in our state.”
The Assam government has pledged a ₹2 crore grant in support of the academy. The Chief Minister also committed to assisting with land acquisition, construction of hostels, staffing support, and additional operational costs to facilitate the academy’s expansion.
