Amritsar, Punjab – May 19 (ANI): In a significant demonstration of India’s defense capabilities, the Indian Army successfully thwarted a major drone and missile attack by Pakistan targeting the Golden Temple in Amritsar on May 8. The swift and precise action ensured the sanctity of the revered Sikh shrine remained unblemished.
Major General Kartik C. Seshadri, General Officer Commanding of the 15th Infantry Division, revealed that the assault involved unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and long-range missiles. Anticipating such an attack, the Indian Army had fortified its air defense around key installations, including the Golden Temple, deploying advanced systems like the indigenous AKASH missile system and L-70 Air Defence Guns.
“On the early morning of May 8, under the cover of darkness, Pakistan initiated a massive air assault using drones and missiles. Our vigilant air defense units intercepted and neutralized all incoming threats, ensuring not even a scratch on our holy Golden Temple,” stated Major General Seshadri.
This attempted attack followed India’s launch of Operation Sindoor on May 7, a retaliatory strike targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir. The operation was in response to the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which resulted in the deaths of 26 individuals, including a Nepali national.
Operation Sindoor achieved significant success, with precision strikes eliminating nearly 100 terror operatives and destroying key terrorist bases, including the Jaish-e-Mohammed headquarters in Bahawalpur and the Lashkar-e-Taiba training facility in Muridke.
In retaliation, Pakistan launched a series of drone and missile attacks targeting Indian military installations and civilian areas. The Indian Army’s proactive measures and robust air defense systems effectively neutralized these threats, safeguarding critical infrastructure and civilian lives.
The Indian Army’s successful defense against the attempted attack on the Golden Temple underscores its commitment to protecting the nation’s sovereignty and cultural heritage. The operation stands as a testament to India’s readiness and resilience in the face of evolving security challenges.
