Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], May 11 (ANI): As the world celebrated Mother’s Day, Team India ODI skipper and right-hand batter Rohit Sharma took to his official social media handle to extend heartfelt wishes to his mother, Purnima Sharma, and wife, Ritika Sajdeh. Rohit posted pictures with his wife and mother on his Instagram story, captioning it, “Happy Mother’s Day. To the ones who made the world our happy place.”
In addition to celebrating the special occasion, Rohit recently made headlines with his announcement to retire from Test cricket. Just over a month before India’s next campaign with a five-Test series against England starting on June 20 at Headingley, Rohit made the decision to step away from the longest format after a career spanning 67 Tests and 11 years.
Rohit made his Test debut against the West Indies in November 2013 and went on to represent India in 67 Tests. He scored 4,301 runs at an average of 40.57, including 12 centuries and 18 fifties. His highest score of 212 came during a memorable home series against South Africa in 2019, placing him as India’s 16th-highest run-getter in Test cricket.
He began his Test journey with a memorable 177 against the West Indies at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, in 2013. Despite early struggles to solidify his spot in the longer format, especially on foreign tours, Rohit proved his worth with twin centuries against South Africa in Visakhapatnam in 2019, which revitalized his career as an opener.
Over the course of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC), he accumulated 2,716 runs at an average of 41.15, with nine centuries and eight fifties. Rohit led India to the final of the WTC against Australia in 2023, although India lost the final.
Rohit’s legacy in Test cricket is marked by his consistency and his role as India’s top run-getter and century-maker in WTC history, ranking 10th among the top run-scorers overall.
