Seoul [South Korea], July 21 (ANI/WAM): At least 18 people have been killed and nine remain missing as heavy rains and landslides continued to wreak havoc across South Korea since last week, the government announced on Monday.
According to Yonhap News Agency, the torrential rains, which began on Wednesday, have forced more than 14,000 people to evacuate to shelters in 15 major cities and provinces. The deluge has caused extensive damage to both public and private infrastructure, with 1,999 reports of destruction to public facilities and 2,238 to private properties.
While the rains have subsided in many areas, and authorities lifted all heavy rain advisories on Sunday, the scale of damage remains significant. The government has downgraded its warning level from “serious” to “attention” as recovery efforts get underway.
Emergency crews continue to search for those missing, while thousands of displaced residents remain in temporary shelters as clean-up operations proceed.
