Washington, DC, January 20 (ANI): US President Donald Trump on Monday confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin has been invited to join the proposed Gaza Board of Peace, describing him as one of several world leaders considered for the initiative.
The Gaza Board of Peace is part of Phase 2 of Trump’s 20-point peace plan aimed at ending the conflict in the Middle East. The initiative is intended to promote stability and oversee post-conflict reconstruction in the Gaza Strip.
Speaking to reporters during a media gaggle, Trump said Putin was among those invited to participate in the board, which he said would work toward peace and stability in Gaza. When asked directly whether he had invited the Russian president, Trump replied, “Yes, he’s one of the people. These are world leaders. And the answer is yes.”
The board was first proposed by Trump last September as part of his plan to end the war in Gaza, though the initiative now appears to be aimed at mediating global conflicts more broadly. The high-profile effort invites leaders from around 60 countries to join a new body focused on promoting stability and overseeing post-conflict reconstruction, particularly in Gaza.
According to a White House statement, proposed executive board members would oversee key portfolios critical to Gaza’s stabilization and long-term development. These include governance capacity-building, regional relations, reconstruction, investment attraction, large-scale funding, and capital mobilization.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi has also been invited by Trump to serve on the Gaza Peace Board. Countries that commit USD 1 billion would secure permanent seats on the board, while those that do not make the contribution could still participate for a three-year term.
During the same media interaction, Trump also floated the idea of imposing a 200 percent tariff on French wine and champagne exported to the United States after French President Emmanuel Macron reportedly declined to sit on the Board of Peace. Responding to questions about Macron’s refusal, Trump said, “Nobody wants him because he’s going to be out of office very soon.”
“I’ll put a 200 percent tariff on his wines and champagnes, and he’ll join, but he doesn’t have to join,” Trump added.
