New Delhi [India], November 24 (ANI): External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar on Monday condoled the death of veteran Bollywood actor Dharmendra, noting that his contributions to popularising Indian cinema globally will always be remembered.
In a post on X, Jaishankar wrote, “Saddened at the passing away of veteran Indian actor Dharmendra ji. His timeless performances and contributions in popularising Indian cinema globally will always be remembered.”
The “He-Man” of Indian cinema, who had been unwell for some time, passed away at his Mumbai residence on Monday at the age of 89.
Dharmendra is survived by his first wife, Prakash Kaur; his second wife, actress Hema Malini; and six children, including sons Sunny Deol and Bobby Deol, and daughters Vijeta and Ajeita from his first marriage, as well as daughters Esha Deol and Ahana Deol from his second marriage.
Widely adored as the “He-Man” of Indian films, Dharmendra starred in several classics, including Sholay, Dharamveer, Chupke Chupke, Loafer, Jugnu, and Seeta Aur Geeta.
He was last seen in Teri Baaton Mein Aisa Uljha Jiya in 2024, in which he played the role of Shahid Kapoor’s grandfather. Before that, in 2023, he captivated audiences with his warm and graceful performance in Karan Johar’s Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani, reviving the romantic aura he was cherished for throughout his career.
From Ayee Milan Ki Bela, Anupama, Aas Paas and Pyar Hi Pyar to Blackmail, Ek Mahal Ho Sapno Ka, Mere Humdum Mere Dost, Jeevan Mrityu and Aap Ki Parchhaiyan, Dharmendra embodied the quintessential romantic hero with effortless charm. Decades later, he continued to win over younger audiences through films like Life in a… Metro and Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani.
His upcoming film Ikkis, directed by Sriram Raghavan, is scheduled for release in December. Even at 89, Dharmendra remained committed to his craft, inspiring generations with his artistry, discipline and healthy lifestyle.
Dharmendra’s enduring appeal spanned generations, and with his passing, he leaves behind a legacy deeply cherished by admirers, colleagues and the nation at large.
