CYPAN is a youth-led initiative that spans across 56 member nations of the Commonwealth, promoting peace, respect, and mutual understanding while working actively to counter violent extremism. For the 2025–2027 term, Sukanya will serve as Lead – Communications & Public Relations, representing India on this global platform.
Prof. Devendra Jalihal, Director of IIT Guwahati, congratulated Sukanya on her achievement, stating,
“We are immensely proud of Sukanya Sonowal for her selection as a Commonwealth Youth Peace Ambassador. We are confident that she will make a meaningful contribution to peacebuilding efforts across the Commonwealth and inspire many other students to pursue initiatives with global impact.”
Sukanya’s selection followed a rigorous three-stage process, including an initial application and two rounds of interviews. The process evaluated applicants on their peacebuilding experience, leadership capabilities, community engagement, and commitment to Commonwealth values.
Hailing from the Lakhimpur district of Assam, Sukanya has an impressive background in communications and outreach. Over the past four years, she has played a pivotal role in Techniche, IIT Guwahati’s flagship techno-management festival, as part of the Media and Branding team.
She is also the co-founder of STEMvibe – STEM for Viksit Bharat Empowerment, a national initiative promoting STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics) education and outreach. Through STEMvibe, she has reached over 3,000 participants across India. Additionally, she leads The Integral Cup, a national-level undergraduate mathematics competition that drew over 2,500 participants in its inaugural edition.
Her leadership experience includes collaborations with leading global firms such as Optiver, Qube Research & Technologies, and Jane Street, underlining her ability to drive international communication campaigns and youth-oriented outreach programs.
In response to her appointment, Sukanya shared,
“I am deeply honored to represent India and IIT Guwahati on this global platform. This opportunity stems from my belief that communication can be a powerful tool for positive change. My journey—from volunteering at campus events to leading international initiatives—shows that every experience shapes us for a larger purpose. I encourage fellow students to embrace opportunities beyond their immediate field of study. The skills we develop through such initiatives will not only shape our careers but empower us to become global citizens who can contribute to humanity’s biggest challenges.”
