Junagadh (Gujarat) [India], April 30 (ANI): In a decisive move to preserve the historic Uparkot Fort and enforce urban regulations, the Junagadh district administration launched a large-scale operation to remove illegal encroachments surrounding the site. A significant police presence was deployed to support the initiative.
Charansinh Gohil, the Sub-Divisional Magistrate (SDM) of Junagadh, confirmed that the removal operation targeted unauthorized structures near the extension area of the ancient Uparkot Fort. “A total of 59 illegal encroachments have been cleared. Despite prior notices, the occupants failed to comply, prompting the current action. The operation is being conducted in collaboration with local police,” he stated.
This enforcement drive is part of a broader campaign by the Gujarat government to tackle unlawful settlements and identify undocumented foreign nationals residing illegally in the state.
On Tuesday, the Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation carried out a separate demolition drive targeting illegal Bangladeshi settlements near Chandola Lake. Joint Commissioner of Police (Crime) Sharad Singhal noted that a large number of Bangladeshi nationals had established an unauthorized settlement known as “Siyasatnagar Bangal Vaas.”
“During a survey conducted by the AMC, multiple illegal constructions were identified. As part of the demolition effort, approximately 50 JCBs were deployed, and around 2,000 police personnel were stationed to maintain order,” Singhal said.
Simultaneously, in another district-level crackdown, Umargam Police detained seven illegal Bangladeshi immigrants as part of a coordinated effort to address illegal immigration across Gujarat.
The Gujarat government’s multi-pronged approach underscores its commitment to preserving heritage sites, enforcing urban planning norms, and addressing national security concerns linked to unauthorized foreign residency.
