Brasilia [Brazil], July 31 (ANI): India and Brazil convened the 8th Joint Defence Committee meeting in Brasilia on July 30, focusing on enhancing military cooperation, training, and regional security in both the Indo-Pacific and Latin American regions.
According to a statement from the Ministry of Defence, the meeting was co-chaired by Shri Vishwesh Negi, Joint Secretary (International Cooperation), and Major General Willain Koji Kamei, Deputy Chief of Policy and Strategy from Brazil. The talks emphasized strengthening bilateral collaboration in military training, defence industry partnerships, and joint efforts to promote regional and global security.
India and Brazil share a longstanding and multifaceted relationship, formally elevated to a Strategic Partnership in 2006. The two nations collaborate actively across several multilateral and plurilateral platforms, including BRICS, IBSA, G20, G-4, the International Solar Alliance, the Global Biofuel Alliance, and the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure. They also maintain close cooperation in international bodies such as the United Nations, World Trade Organization, UNESCO, and the World Intellectual Property Organization.
The bilateral relationship is underpinned by shared democratic values, a common global vision, and a mutual commitment to inclusive economic development. In a significant step forward, India and Brazil launched a 2+2 Political-Military Dialogue in 2024, fostering greater synergy between diplomatic and defence establishments. Additionally, the Strategic Dialogue mechanism, initiated in 2006 to address regional and global issues of mutual concern, has met five times between 2007 and 2015.
High-level defence exchanges have been a hallmark of the partnership. Over the past two years, the Chief of the Air Staff of the Indian Air Force visited Brazil, while the Chiefs of the Brazilian Army, Navy, and Air Force have made reciprocal visits to India. These exchanges underscore the growing importance of defence ties between the two countries.
Since 2007, a total of 134 defence officers—70 from India and 64 from Brazil—have participated in a range of short- and long-term military training programs. The cooperation also extends to joint exercises and naval sailing regattas, further deepening operational familiarity and trust between the two militaries. (ANI)
