New Delhi [India], November 3 (ANI): The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) on Monday said that India has delivered food items to support families affected by the recent earthquake in Afghanistan.
Official spokesperson for the MEA, Randhir Jaiswal, shared images of the aid dispatched by India. “Reaffirming its support to the Afghan people, India delivers food items for the families affected by the earthquake. India — first responder,” Jaiswal posted on X.
External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar also spoke with his Afghanistan counterpart, Amir Khan Muttaqi, to convey condolences over the loss of lives in the earthquake that struck Balkh, Samangan, and Baghlan provinces. Jaishankar said that Indian relief materials are being distributed and additional supplies of medicines will reach soon.
In a post on X, Jaishankar wrote, “Called FM Mawlawi Amir Khan Muttaqi of Afghanistan this afternoon to convey condolences at the loss of lives in the earthquake that struck Balkh, Samangan, and Baghlan provinces. Indian relief material for the earthquake-impacted communities is being handed over today. Further supplies of medicines to reach soon.”
The earthquake, measuring 6.3 in magnitude, struck northern Afghanistan near the city of Mazar-i-Sharif in the early hours of Monday at around 2:00 am IST, killing at least 20 people and injuring over 300 others.
The quake also damaged the historic Blue Mosque, or Mazar-i-Sharif shrine. The disaster adds to the series of deadly earthquakes that have hit the country since the Taliban took power in 2021, testing the administration’s capacity to govern amid dwindling foreign aid. Just two months ago, another powerful quake in eastern Afghanistan claimed more than 2,000 lives, according to Al Jazeera. (ANI)
