Kathmandu [Nepal], June 14 (ANI): In a continuing gesture of friendship and cooperation, the Government of India gifted 40 ambulances to health institutions across 33 districts in Nepal on Saturday, under its long-standing Nepal-India Development Partnership initiative.
According to a statement from the Indian Embassy in Kathmandu, the ambulances were distributed through coordinated ceremonies held at four locations — the Embassy of India in Kathmandu, the Consulate General of India in Birgunj, and the Pension Paying Offices in Pokhara and Dharan.
A total of 22 ambulances were handed over at the event in Kathmandu, while 7 each were distributed in Birgunj and Pokhara, and 4 in Dharan. The vehicles will serve health institutions in all seven provinces of Nepal.
At the Kathmandu ceremony, Prasanna Shrivastava, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy, handed over the keys to the recipients. In his remarks, Shrivastava highlighted that gifting ambulances is part of India’s consistent commitment to enhancing Nepal’s healthcare infrastructure.
“This initiative is a part of the larger, robust, and vibrant development partnership between India and Nepal, which has expanded, deepened, and diversified over the last seven decades,” he noted.
Beneficiaries from various districts expressed their appreciation for India’s ongoing support in Nepal’s development. They voiced confidence that the ambulances would significantly improve access to health services in remote and underserved regions.
Similar sentiments were echoed at the events in Birgunj, Pokhara, and Dharan, where local leaders and health officials welcomed the aid, thanking the Government of India for standing by Nepal during critical developmental needs.
India’s gifting of ambulances to Nepal has a long history. Since 1994, India has donated a total of 1,049 ambulances across the country, including the 40 provided on Saturday. India has also extended other forms of vehicular support: 300 school buses have been donated to educational institutions, 200 vehicles were provided in 2022 to assist law enforcement and the Election Commission during elections, and in May 2025, 15 electric vehicles were gifted to Nepal’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the inaugural ‘Sagarmatha Sambaad’.
The Indian Embassy reaffirmed that these efforts reflect India’s unwavering commitment to supporting Nepal’s socio-economic development and to strengthening the close people-to-people ties between the two neighboring nations.
The events were attended by mayors, chairpersons of municipalities and rural municipalities, political representatives, social workers, and representatives of the beneficiary institutions from the provinces of Bagmati, Karnali, Lumbini, and Sudurpaschim. (ANI)
