Ottawa [Canada], June 7 (ANI): Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney on Friday said that the upcoming G7 Summit will feature key discussions on issues such as security, energy, digital infrastructure, and critical minerals, and emphasized that India’s participation in the summit is crucial given its global economic and demographic stature.
Carney stated that India’s position as the fifth largest economy and the most populous nation underscores its relevance at the global decision-making table. “Let’s put the two aspects in context—first is, Canada is in the role of the G7 chair and, as agreed with our G7 colleagues, we will include important discussions on energy, security, digital futures, critical minerals, and partnerships, particularly in infrastructure development across emerging and developing economies,” he said.
Highlighting India’s role in global supply chains, Carney remarked, “There are certain countries that should be at the table for those discussions, and in my capacity as G7 chair, I will consult with others to make those determinations. India is central to a number of those supply chains, so it makes sense for India to be involved.”
Carney also addressed bilateral ties between Canada and India, noting that both nations are working on strengthening law enforcement cooperation. “We have now agreed to continue dialogue between law enforcement agencies, which is important for ensuring accountability,” he said, adding that he had extended an invitation to Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi to attend the summit, which Modi has accepted.
On Friday, Prime Minister Modi confirmed his participation in the G7 Summit, scheduled to be held in Kananaskis, Canada, later this month. “Glad to receive a call from Prime Minister Mark J. Carney of Canada. Congratulated him on his recent election victory and thanked him for the invitation to the G7 Summit in Kananaskis later this month. As vibrant democracies bound by deep people-to-people ties, India and Canada will work together with renewed vigour, guided by mutual respect and shared interests. Look forward to our meeting at the Summit,” PM Modi posted on X.
The invitation and acceptance come after a period of diplomatic strain between the two countries. Tensions escalated following Canadian allegations that Indian agents were involved in the June 2023 killing of Hardeep Singh Nijjar, a Canadian citizen and pro-Khalistan activist, outside a Sikh temple in Vancouver. India strongly denied the accusations, and both nations expelled senior diplomats in a tit-for-tat exchange. (ANI)
