New Delhi [India], December 3 (ANI): During Russian President Vladimir Putin’s visit to India beginning Thursday, both countries are expected to discuss the development of advanced variants of the BrahMos supersonic cruise missiles, which played a pivotal role for the Indian defence forces during the four-day Operation Sindoor against Pakistan.
Defence sources indicated a need for lighter variants, such as the BrahMos NG, which can be mounted on all types of Indian Air Force fighter aircraft, with a capability to strike targets at over 400 km. Discussions are also expected on longer-range versions capable of engaging targets at more than three times the current range.
The BrahMos supersonic cruise missile has emerged as one of the most successful co-development models of military hardware between India and Russia, two long-standing allies. In pre-visit meetings, both sides have also explored cooperation in hypersonic missile development and air-to-air missiles with extended ranges.
President Putin’s two-day visit will likely coincide with India clearing a deal for 280 S-400 Sudarshan Chakra air defence missiles, which were deployed successfully against Pakistani targets across multiple locations earlier this year.
India has significantly strengthened its Navy and other armed forces with BrahMos missiles and has successfully exported the system to the Philippines, with potential for further sales across Asia. The BrahMos, with its supersonic speed, remains highly difficult to intercept, providing reliable strike capability as demonstrated during the May conflict with Pakistan. (ANI)
