New Delhi [India], October 5 (ANI): In the wake of devastating heavy rains in Nepal that have caused substantial loss of life and property, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences and reaffirmed India’s support for its neighbour during this crisis.
In a post on X, PM Modi wrote, “The loss of lives and damage caused by heavy rains in Nepal is distressing. We stand with the people and Government of Nepal in this difficult time.” He added, “As a friendly neighbour and first responder, India remains committed to providing any assistance that may be required.”
India has historically played a crucial role in aiding Nepal during natural disasters, including the 2015 earthquake, which killed 8,962 people and injured 21,952, and the 2020 floods, which resulted in 196 deaths and injured 188. The two countries share deep cultural, economic, and political ties, often extending mutual support during emergencies.
Recent heavy rainfall in Nepal triggered landslides and flooding across multiple districts, affecting thousands, causing casualties, and damaging infrastructure. Rescue operations continue in remote areas. The Armed Police Force (APF) Nepal has confirmed that the death toll has risen to 40, with 13 injured and 11 reported missing due to floods, landslides, lightning, and road accidents.
The rainfall pattern has shifted to eastern Nepal, which remains in the red zone due to incessant rain. Authorities opened all 56 gates of the Koshi Barrage adjoining India after a sharp rise in the Saptakoshi River’s water level, which exceeded the danger threshold. Given the heightened flood risk in low-lying areas of Sunsari and Udayapur, CDO Mishra urged residents living near riverbanks to remain alert and take precautions. (ANI)
