These remarks come amid tensions between India and the US over tariffs imposed during the Trump administration. Fifty percent tariffs on Indian goods came into effect on August 27, following a notice by the US Customs and Border Protection (CBP). Former President Donald Trump, who has referred to India as a “tariff king,” cited the trade deficit with India and New Delhi’s continued purchases of Russian oil and military equipment as reasons for the move.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi emphasized that his government would protect small entrepreneurs, farmers, and livestock rearers. During the recent Monsoon session of Parliament, Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal stated in both Houses that the government is examining the impact of tariffs and will take all necessary steps to safeguard national interests.
In recent months, India and the US have been negotiating an interim trade deal. However, India has expressed reservations regarding US demands to open the agricultural and dairy sectors, which are vital for livelihoods in the country.
India and the US launched talks for a just, balanced, and mutually beneficial Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in March, aiming to complete the first stage of the agreement by October–November 2025. (ANI)
