Washington, D.C. [US], May 31 (ANI): Indian Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri held several high-level engagements with senior officials from the U.S. Administration during his visit to Washington, D.C. from May 27–29, 2025, to advance the bilateral agenda under the India-U.S. COMPACT (Catalyzing Opportunities for Military Partnership, Accelerated Commerce & Technology) for the 21st Century.
Among the key discussions was Misri’s meeting with U.S. Deputy Secretary of the Treasury Michael Faulkender, where the two sides explored collaboration on upcoming Financial Action Task Force (FATF) processes. According to a statement by the Ministry of External Affairs, the talks also covered deepening economic and financial ties and coordination within international financial institutions.
Sources indicate that India is preparing to push for Pakistan’s reclassification onto the FATF grey list, citing credible evidence of terror financing and money laundering by certain entities and individuals. A comprehensive dossier detailing India’s findings will be submitted to FATF, urging action under established international protocols.
During the visit, Misri participated in broad-ranging inter-agency consultations on the India-U.S. COMPACT, engaging with officials from the Departments of State, Defense, Treasury, and Commerce, as well as the National Security Council.
In a luncheon meeting with Deputy Secretary of State Christopher Landau, both sides reviewed the full spectrum of the bilateral relationship, emphasizing that technology, trade, and talent will define the future of the India-U.S. partnership.
Misri also met with Deputy Secretary of Defense Steve Feinberg and Under Secretary for Policy Elbridge Colby. The discussions reaffirmed a shared commitment to a robust and forward-looking defense partnership, focusing on co-production and co-development initiatives, sustained joint military exercises, improved logistics, and information-sharing frameworks, as well as enhancing armed forces interoperability.
During his meeting with Under Secretary of Commerce Jeffrey Kessler, both sides reviewed progress on the India-U.S. Bilateral Trade Agreement. They discussed cooperation in critical and emerging technologies and stressed the need to streamline the International Traffic in Arms Regulations (ITAR) and export control frameworks. An agreement was reached to convene the next Strategic Trade Dialogue at the earliest opportunity.
The visit also featured strategic discussions with U.S. Deputy National Security Advisor Pavan Kapoor, where both sides emphasized the importance of bilateral collaboration in cutting-edge and emerging technologies.
As per the joint vision outlined in the India-U.S. COMPACT, discussions extended to cooperation in defense, energy security, counter-terrorism, and engagement in key multilateral platforms such as the Quad, I2U2, and the India-Middle East-Europe Economic Corridor (IMEEC).
Foreign Secretary Misri’s visit builds on momentum from Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s visit to the U.S. on February 13, 2025, where the COMPACT was officially launched, marking a new chapter in the strategic partnership between the two democracies. (ANI)
