Abu Dhabi [UAE], September 18 (ANI): Union Minister for Commerce and Industry Piyush Goyal on Thursday stated that trade negotiations between India and the United States are progressing positively, reflecting the strong and comprehensive strategic partnership between the two nations.
Speaking at the 13th meeting of the UAE-India High-Level Joint Task Force on Investments in Abu Dhabi, Goyal said, “The US discussions with the Assistant USTR happened two days back. They were productive and are working on the right track. The US relationship is a very strong, comprehensive strategic partnership between two friendly countries.”
India and the US launched talks for a just, balanced, and mutually beneficial Bilateral Trade Agreement (BTA) in March this year, aiming to complete the first stage of the agreement by October–November 2025. Assistant US Trade Representative Brendan Lynch met with his counterpart, Ministry of Commerce and Industry Special Secretary Rajesh Agrawal, on September 16 to discuss next steps, with both sides agreeing to intensify efforts toward concluding the trade deal.
A statement from the Ministry of Commerce and Industry highlighted that the discussions were “positive and forward-looking, covering various aspects of the trade deal” and reaffirmed the goal of achieving an early conclusion of a mutually beneficial agreement.
Over the past few months, India and the US have negotiated for an interim trade deal amid rising tensions, including US-imposed tariffs. In July, the US levied a 25 per cent tariff on Indian goods, citing India’s continued imports of Russian oil, followed by an additional 25 per cent tariff in August, bringing the total to 50 per cent. India has expressed reservations regarding US demands to open its sensitive agricultural and dairy sectors.
Goyal also highlighted India’s independent foreign policy and strong partnerships with other countries, including the UAE. “As regards the relationship with the UAE, it stands on its own legs. It is underpinned by trust, possibilities, and opportunities. And for India, no two relationships are co-mingled or depend on each other,” he said, noting opportunities to expand Indian exports to the UAE in sectors such as textiles, pharmaceuticals, fish and marine products, and leather goods.
The minister expressed confidence that India’s export growth and bilateral trade partnerships will continue to strengthen despite global challenges. (ANI)
