Jammu (Jammu and Kashmir)/New Delhi [India], May 9 (ANI): In a significant show of strength, the Indian Army shot down more than 50 Pakistani drones during a large-scale counter-drone operation conducted on the night of May 8–9 along the Line of Control (LoC) and International Borders (IB) in Jammu and Kashmir. The operation followed multiple failed attempts by Pakistan to send swarm drones into Indian territory across various strategic locations.
Sources confirmed that Indian Army Air Defence units responded swiftly to the aerial threat, targeting drones in areas including Udhampur, Samba, Jammu, Akhnoor, Nagrota, and Pathankot. The Army used an array of air defence systems such as L-70 guns, ZU-23mm, Schilka systems, and advanced counter-unmanned aerial systems (UAS) to successfully neutralize the threats.
“Yesterday night, when Pakistan made failed attempts to send swarm drones across various places along the LoC and IB, over 50 drones were successfully neutralised by Indian Army Air Defence units,” sources told ANI.
In addition to the drone incursions, the Pakistani Armed Forces also violated the ceasefire agreement at multiple points along the western border and LoC. The Indian Army decisively responded to these ceasefire violations with targeted retaliation under Operation Sindoor, which had been launched earlier in the week. As part of this operation, the Indian Armed Forces reportedly neutralised nine terror camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).
“Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire Western Border on the intervening night of 08 and 09 May 2025. Pak troops also resorted to numerous ceasefire violations. The drone attacks were effectively repulsed, and a befitting reply was given to the CFVs. The Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation,” the Army stated via the Additional Directorate General of Public Information (ADG PI).
Residents near the affected border areas reported a night of high tension, with blackouts and continuous firing. “There was a complete blackout last night. After which, drones started flying and firing continued the entire night. Our forces are giving Pakistan a befitting reply,” said a local resident. Another witness reported seeing 3–4 drones around 8 PM, followed by retaliatory firing. Schools were closed as a precaution, although no civilian casualties were reported.
Jammu and Kashmir’s former Chief Minister, Omar Abdullah, posted on X, stating that he was traveling to Jammu to assess the situation following the drone attack attempts.
Despite the severity of the attacks, the Indian Armed Forces managed to thwart the drone incursions and retaliate against ceasefire violations with no reported casualties. The military’s swift and robust response highlighted India’s preparedness and resolve to defend its borders against aerial and cross-border threats.
