The Philippines Institute of Volcanology and Seismology reported that Pacific coastal areas in the country could experience tsunami waves less than one meter high. According to Al Jazeera, “The first tsunami waves are expected to arrive between 1:20 PM and 2:40 PM local time on Wednesday (0620 GMT to 0740 GMT Thursday). People are advised to stay away from beaches and not approach the coast in provinces affected by the advisory.”
The earthquake struck off Russia’s far-east coast at 8:25 a.m. local time on Wednesday, according to the US Geological Survey. Several injuries were reported in Russia’s Far East region, according to the TASS news agency, as cited by Al Jazeera.
Japan’s Meteorological Agency reported tsunami waves as high as 50 cm at Ishinomaki Port, a major port city in Miyagi Prefecture on the east coast. Other initial waves measured between 20 to 40 cm, but authorities warned that subsequent waves could be larger.
Experts noted that tsunami waves, even as small as 50 cm, carry substantial force. Local media emphasized that such waves are far stronger than typical sea waves and can exert up to 200 kg of force.
Tsunami warnings and advisories were also issued for Taiwan, the Philippines, Hawaii, Alaska’s Aleutian Islands, and parts of Indonesia. Much of the US West Coast remains under tsunami advisory, Al Jazeera reported.
